Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto has accompanied him throughout his life. At Fairfield Hall, Rubinstein brings it to life a final time in his warm-hearted, lyrical style.<\/p>\n

For this occasion, Arthur Rubinstein returns to London, where he made his debut 63 years earlier. Now 88 years old, he is a living legend, on a par with the great composers like Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky. It is the finale of a lifetime of achievement and a grandiose performance from a past master.<\/p>\n

Rubenstein dominated the world stage for three quarters of a century and lived life to the fullest as a connoisseur, globetrotter and notorious womaniser. Although he claimed to practice as little as possible, he would go on to become one of the most important pianists of the 20th century and described himself as \u201cthe happiest man I ever met in my life\u201d.<\/p>\n

In Farewell to Chopin<\/em> Daniel Barenboim confesses that at the age of just 14, he smoked his first cigar and drank his first vodka together with Rubinstein. His constant companion Annabelle Weidenfeld recalls his incredible charm, and youngest daughter Alina Rubinstein remembers the charismatic but often absent father whom she \u201cwouldn\u2019t trade for anyone in the world\u201d. Rarely seen archive recordings provide fascinating insights into the family life of the Rubinsteins, while the master at the keys also has his own say.<\/p>\n

No audience is present for this legendary concert recording \u2013 the performance is exclusively for the cameras. Together with the London Symphony Orchestra under conductor Andr\u00e9 Previn, Rubinstein is every bit the lustrous piano icon: upright and elegant in his tailcoat, he is enthroned at his instrument. The maestro’s playing is generous, luminous, supple, rhapsodic. Seemingly effortlessly, he evokes his singing and breathing \u201cRubinstein tone\u201d that is venerated to this day. At almost 90 years of age, this exceptional musician and interpreter of Chopin is as captivating as ever: he is buoyant, a little mischievous. His audience always loved him for these qualities \u2013 and he loved them back.<\/p>\n

Ein Dreivierteljahrhundert hat Rubinstein die B\u00fchnenwelt beherrscht \u2013 und als Connaisseur, Weltenbummler sowie Womanizer das Leben. Obwohl er gesteht, \u201eweniger ge\u00fcbt zu haben als andere\u201c, avanciert er zu wohl bedeutendsten Pianisten des 20. Jahrhunderts und bezeichnet sich selbst als \u201egl\u00fccklichsten Menschen, dem ich je begegnet bin\u201c. \u00a0<\/p>

In \u201eAbschied von Chopin\u201c gesteht Daniel Barenboim, dass er als 14-J\u00e4hriger mit Rubinstein seine erste Zigarre geraucht und seinen ersten Wodka getrunken habe. Seine Lebensgef\u00e4hrtin Annabelle Weidenfeld nennt ihn den charmantesten Menschen \u00fcberhaupt und die j\u00fcngste Tochter, Alina Rubinstein, erinnert sich an den charismatischen aber oft abwesenden Vater, den sie \u201ef\u00fcr niemanden in der Welt habe eintauschen wollen\u201c. Faszinierende Einblicke in das Familienleben der Rubinsteins gew\u00e4hren bisher selten gezeigte Archivaufnahmen und auch der Grandseigneur an den Tasten kommt selbst zu Wort.<\/p>

In der legend\u00e4ren Konzertaufzeichnung, ganz ohne Publikum, eigens f\u00fcr die Kameras, mit dem London Symphony Orchestra unter Dirigent Andr\u00e9 Previn, ist Rubinstein noch immer die majest\u00e4tische Pianisten-Ikone: aufrecht wie elegant thront er im Frack am Fl\u00fcgel. Das Spiel des Maestros ist edel, golden, gelassen, lebensvoll. M\u00fchelos evoziert er seinen singenden und atmenden \u201eRubinstein Ton\u201c, den junge Pianistinnen und Pianisten bis heute bewundern. Auch mit fast 90 Jahren hat der Ausnahmepianist und Chopin-Interpret schlechthin nichts von seiner Sogkraft eingeb\u00fc\u00dft: heiter ist er, ein wenig verschmitzt. Daf\u00fcr haben ihn seine Zuh\u00f6rer stets geliebt \u2013 und er sie.<\/p>
