The private life of Jos\u00e9 Carreras was not always as glamorous and undiluted as his international career: his family was persecuted by the Franco regime, his mother dies of cancer when he was only 18, in the late 1980s he is diagnosed with leukemia. Especially the handling of tragic moments in his life reveals a lot about the human behind the opera star. He is a tireless warrior, a great communicator, and a merciless optimist. His energy is demonstrated not least in 1990 with the founding of the Three Tenors alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Shortly before their formation, Carreras was part of the first recording of Leonard Bernstein\u2019s \u201cWest Side Story\u201d, where he took on the lead role of Tony as the only Spanish person in the production.<\/p>\n

The over 30 yearlong dedication for the Jos\u00e9 Carreras Leukemia Foundation is another proof of the indomitable nature of the Catalan: year after year he invites stars to his charity gala in Leipzig. Over 220 million euros have been donated to date \u2013 another impressive lifetime achievement.<\/p>\n

The film shows the ups and downs of a grand career \u2013 and lets companions, friends and Jos\u00e9 Carreras himself speak about it. Birthday wishes from Pl\u00e1cido Domingo, Peter Maffay, Klaus Meine, Barbara Sch\u00f6neberger, and many other stars demonstrate the admiration and respect with what the lucky tenor is met with.<\/p>\n

Das Privatleben von Jose\u0301 Carreras lief nicht immer so glanzvoll und ungetru\u0308bt wie seine Weltkarriere: Seine Familie wurde vom Franco-Regime verfolgt, seine Mutter stirbt an Krebs, als er gerade mal 18 Jahre ist, Ende der 80er Jahre erkrankt er an Leuka\u0308mie. Damals noch ein sicheres Todesurteil. Carreras nimmt den Kampf auf und u\u0308berlebt als einer der ersten Patienten, bei dem eine Knochenmarktransplantation durchgefu\u0308hrt wird.<\/p>

Er ist ein unermu\u0308dlicher Ka\u0308mpfer, ein gro\u00dfer Kommunikator und ein gnadenloser Optimist. Seine Energie stellte er nicht zuletzt 1990 mit der Gru\u0308ndung der \u201eDrei Teno\u0308re\u201c an der Seite von Luciano Pavarotti und Placido Domingo unter Beweis. Kurz vor der Gru\u0308ndung war Carreras Teil der ersten Einspielung der \u201eWest Side Story\u201c von Leonard Bernstein, in der er als einziger Spanier die Hauptrolle des amerikanischen Tony u\u0308bernahm.<\/p>

Das mittlerweile 30ja\u0308hrige Engagement fu\u0308r die Jose\u0301 Carreras Leukaemia Foundation sind ein weiterer Beweis fu\u0308r die unbeugsame Natur des Spaniers: Jahr fu\u0308r Jahr la\u0308dt er die Stars nach Leipzig zu seiner Spendengala ein. \u00dcber 220 Millionen Euro kamen dabei bisher zusammen \u2013 auch das ein beeindruckendes Lebenswerk.<\/p>

Ein bewegendes Abschiedskonzert gibt der Tenor in seiner zweiten musikalischen Heimat: in der Wiener Staatsoper. Das Publikum bedankt sich bei ihm mit minutenlangem Applaus. Danke und Adieu an The Lucky Tenor.<\/p>
