The press call the musician the \u201cpunk violinist\u201d while others treat him with scorn. However, the record goes on to sell more copies than any other classical album before or since. Kennedy succeeds in transcending the reservations of an audience that considers classical music too elitist or aloof. Certainly, with his wild hair and an outfit that mixes punk, gothic and new wave, he\u2019s far from the typical classical musician. But manager John Stanley senses an opportunity: <em>\u201cIf Kennedy is permitted to be who he is, you could sell millions of records.\u201d <\/em>And he\u2019s proven right.<\/p>\n<p>The film takes viewers back to 1989 when Kennedy and the English Chamber Orchestra shook up the music scene with their recording of Vivaldi&#8217;s The Four Seasons. I had to change something or else I had to get out. There was nothing to lose.\u201d <\/em>During the recording of The Four Seasons, he strives to free himself both from historically informed performance and the Russian School of playing. He seeks out and finds an interpretation that is inarr keeping with the times. With his playing style and arresting appearance, he breaks with the conventions of the classical concert business. The controversy is even discussed in the UK Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In the concert recording \u2013 filmed in the manner of a pop concert \u2013 the London audience sits at the edge of the stage in jeans and jumpers. The outfits of the orchestra musicians and the stage lighting change depending on the season. Star violinist Maxim Vengerov tells us what is revolutionary about Kennedy&#8217;s playing, and fashion designer Esther Perbandt gives her own view: <em>\u201cHe&#8217;s an individualist. He doesn\u2019t dress like this to market himself.\u201d <\/em>Nigel Kennedy says of himself: <em>\u201cI can only be who I am. Ich hatte nichts zu verlieren.\u201c <\/em>Bei der Aufnahme der \u201aVier Jahreszeiten\u2018 will er sich weder von der historischen Auffu\u0308hrungspraxis noch von der russischen Schule leiten lassen. Er sucht und findet eine Interpretation, die in die Zeit passt. Mit seiner Spielweise und seinem Look bricht er mit den Konventionen des klassischen Konzertbetriebs. Das sorgt sogar f\u00fcr Streit im Parlament des Vereinigten K\u00f6nigreichs.<\/p><p>In der wie ein Popkonzert gefilmten Konzertaufzeichnung sitzt das Londoner Publikum in Jeans und Pulli dicht am B\u00fchnenrand. Die Outfits der Orchestermusiker und die B\u00fchnenbeleuchtung wechseln je nach Jahreszeit. Stargeiger Maxim Vengerov zeigt, was an Kennedys Spiel revolution\u00e4r ist. Die Modedesignerin Esther Perbandt kommentiert: <em>\u201eEr ist Individualist und zieht sich nicht aus Marketing-Gr\u00fcnden so an.\u201c<\/em> Nigel Kennedy selber sagt von sich: <em>\u201eIch kann nur der sein, der ich bin. Und so bin ich halt.\u201c<\/em><\/p><p>Mit seiner Aufnahme hilft Kennedy jungen Musikern, die Grenzen und Regeln der Klassikwelt zu hinterfragen.
