Their endless melodies with the finest tonal gradations, their diverse singing and the infinite variety of rhythms are the lifeblood of the French musician. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death on 27 April 2022, we tell Olivier Messiaen’s story from the perspective of the birds.<\/p>\n

Messiaen became acquainted with birds at a young age, and when he came to Paris from the French provinces in his early 20s, they continued to flutter in his head. As organist of the parish church La Trinit\u00e9 in Paris, it is the birds that provide him with their songs, over which he improvises. Music lovers from all over Europe make a pilgrimage to see him. The premiere of his opera in Paris in 1983 is awaited with great excitement: In “Saint Francis of Assisi” (“Saint Fran\u00e7ois d’Assise”), birds play a central role. For him, the birds are something metaphysical, a direct link to God. <\/p>\n

Against the background of the “Voice of the Birds”, the film portrays the eventful life of the composer and ornithologist Messiaen through musical examples and narratives of selected interlocutors: There is conductor Kent Nagano, cellist Camille Thomas, Ondes Martenot interpreter Natalie Forget and organist Thomas Lac\u00f4te, Messiaen biographer Peter Hill, DJ and biologist Dominik Eulberg and, last but not least, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who vividly explains selected passages from Messiaen’s “Catalogue d’oiseaux” (“Catalogue of Birds”).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Messiaen lernt die V\u00f6gel schon in jungen Jahren kennen und als er mit Anfang 20 aus der franz\u00f6sischen Provinz nach Paris kommt, flattern sie weiter in seinem Kopf. Als Organist der Pfarrkirche La Trinit\u00e9 in Paris sind sie es, die ihm ihre Ges\u00e4nge anvertrauen, \u00fcber die er improvisiert. Musikbegeisterte aus ganz Europa pilgern zu ihm. Wie ein Heiliger zieht er die Menschen an. Mit gro\u00dfer Spannung wird 1983 die Urauff\u00fchrung seiner Oper in Paris erwartet: In \u201eDer Heilige Franz von Assisi\u201c (\u201eSaint Fran\u00e7ois d\u2019Assise\u201c) spielen die V\u00f6gel eine zentrale Rolle. Die V\u00f6gel sind f\u00fcr ihn etwas Metaphysisches, die direkte Verbindung zu Gott.<\/p>

Vor dem Hintergrund der \"Stimme der V\u00f6gel\" schildert der Film das bewegte Leben des Komponisten und Ornithologen Messiaen anhand von musikalischen Beispielen und Erz\u00e4hlungen ausgesuchter Gespr\u00e4chspartner: Da ist der Dirigent Kent Nagano, die Cellistin Camille Thomas, die Ondes Martenot Interpretin Natalie Forget und der Organist Thomas Lac\u00f4te, der Messiaen-Biograf Peter Hill, der DJ und Biologe Dominik Eulberg und nicht zuletzt Pierre-Laurent Aimard, der exemplarisch ausgew\u00e4hlte Passagen aus Messiaens \"Catalogue d'oiseaux\" (\"Vogelkatalog\") anschaulich erl\u00e4utert.<\/p>
