Without them, mankind would not be where it is today. Food, clothing \u2013 the unpretentious ram has been providing man with all this for eleven thousand years. The animals have made societies grow, they prepared people for culture and to this day they guarantee life and prosperity in many parts of the world. ‘Planet of the Sheep’ goes on a search for traces and clues among shepherds and breeders all over the world.<\/p>\n In Europe, the traditional shepherding profession is on the verge of extinction. In the L\u00fcneburg Heath, only a few shepherds are still on the road with their herds of Heidschnucken to preserve the cultural landscape. Though some old shepherding cultures are still alive, in Sardinia as well as in northern Macedonia living the tradition of transhumance of many thousands of animals. In Scotland, a young, female generation is breaking new ground to save the ancient culture of sheep farming into the 21st century. And in Spain, too, new forms of sheep farming are becoming established: shepherd schools are training a new generation of shepherds.<\/p>\n China is going its own way: here, sheep are kept intensively by the hundreds of thousands to satisfy the population’s hunger. But on a smaller scale, quality of life and often human survival are directly linked to the existence of the sheep – as in Ethiopia, where farmers can finance their children’s schooling thanks to just a few animals. Ohne sie w\u00e4re die Menschheit nicht, wo sie heute steht. Nahrung, Kleidung \u2013 all das liefert der anspruchslose Widerk\u00e4uer dem Menschen seit elftausend Jahren. Die Tiere haben Gesellschaften wachsen lassen, sie sind Kulturbereiter des Menschen und bis heute in vielen Teilen der Welt Lebensgarant und Wirtschaftsmotor. \u201aPlanet der Schafe\u2018 begibt sich auf eine Spurensuche bei Sch\u00e4fern und Z\u00fcchtern in aller Welt.<\/p> In Europa steht der traditionelle Hirtenberuf vielfach vor dem Aussterben, in der L\u00fcneburger Heide sind nur noch wenige Sch\u00e4fer mit ihren Heidschnuckenherden unterwegs, um die Kulturlandschaft zu erhalten. Doch noch lebt manche alte Sch\u00e4ferkultur, auf Sardinien ebenso wie in Nordmazedonien mit der Tradition der Transhumanz von vielen tausend Tieren. In Schottland geht eine junge, weibliche Generation neue Wege, um die alte Kultur der Schafzucht in das 21. Jahrhundert zu retten. Und auch in Spanien etablieren sich neue Formen der Schafhaltung: Sch\u00e4ferschulen bilden eine neue Generation von Hirten aus.<\/p> China geht eigene Wege: Hier leben Schafe in Intensivhaltung von hunderttausenden Tieren, um den Hunger der Bev\u00f6lkerung zu stillen. Doch vor allem im Kleinen sind Lebensqualit\u00e4t und oftmals direktes \u00dcberleben des Menschen direkt mit der Existenz des Schafs verkn\u00fcpft - so wie in \u00c4thiopien, wo Bauern schon dank weniger Tieren den Schulbesuch ihrer Kinder finanzieren k\u00f6nnen.
