Forty years ago, a revolution in Iran led by Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the ruler Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and with this a monarchy that had lasted over 2,500 years. The story of the Shah begins with bright ideas and strong ideals, and ends in bloody turmoil. From the beginning of his reign and in his aspirations to modernise Iran, the Shah depended on the support of the clergy and the mullahs. Finally, it is they who bring him down. The struggle between the Shah and Ayatollah Khomeini lasts many decades. In the end, Islamic fundamentalism triumphs, heralding a new challenge for global politics.<\/p>\n

Vor vierzig Jahren st\u00fcrzt im Iran eine Revolution unter der F\u00fchrung von Ayatollah Khomeini den Herrscher Schah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi und damit eine \u00fcber 2500 Jahre alte Monarchie. Warum scheiterte der letzte persische Kaiser \u2013 eine der Schl\u00fcsselfiguren der zweiten H\u00e4lfte des 20. Jahrhunderts \u2013 so tragisch? Die Geschichte des Schahs beginnt mit guten Ideen und Idealen und endet im blutigen Chaos. Von Beginn seiner Herrschaft und der erstrebten Modernisierung des Iran setzt der Schah auch auf die Unterst\u00fctzung durch den Klerus und die Mullahs. Sie sind es schlie\u00dflich, die ihn zu Fall bringen. Die Gegnerschaft zwischen dem Schah und Ayatollah Khomeini begleitet sie viele Jahrzehnte. Am Ende siegt der islamische Fundamentalismus, eine neue Herausforderung f\u00fcr die Weltpolitik.<\/p>

Der Film erz\u00e4hlt die Geschichte vom Kampf zweier Rivalen: von Schah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi und von Ayatollah Khomeini, der Leitfigur der Islamischen Revolution und dem ersten Herrscher der islamischen Republik Iran. Khomeini wird schon kurz nach dem Amtsantritt des Schahs in den 40er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts zu seinem gr\u00f6\u00dften Gegner und bek\u00e4mpft ihn w\u00e4hrend seiner gesamten Herrschaft bis zum bitteren Ende. Hatte ihn der Schah einst au\u00dfer Landes verwiesen, so wird er in der Islamischen Revolution zum Heiligen und Hoffnungstr\u00e4ger all derer, die sich vom Schah und von der Monarchie betrogen f\u00fchlen.
