They live two lives. They work to survive, but music is their passion. At night they perform in sold out concert halls, and clean toilets the morning after. They tickle the ivories and sort out the trash in close succession. They interpret Beethoven just before repairing exhaust pipes. They are survival artists.

38 dead on the beach in Sousse, Tunisia. A terror attack aboard a Russian holiday flight in Egypt, many victims of the attacks in Istanbul: terrorists are targeting tourists.

It is all part of a treacherous strategy with multiple goals – the death of citizens of the detested States of the West, who governments they have declared their enemy. The weakening of the economies of the holiday destinations Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey against whose governments they are fighting, and whose populations are more easily radicalised in times of instability.

In Turkey every 12th job is directly or indirectly linked to tourism, in Tunisia it is every 7th, in Egypt every 8th.

Slave labour in Dubai. The documentary casts light on everyday life in the dazzling glitter and glamour of Dubai and reveals the two-faced brutality and the socially accepted abuse of power that much of its domestic life is based on.

The film describes the fates of young Ethiopian girls before and after their work spells in Dubai. It shows how human traffickers recruit their victims and spirit them away to their foreign destinations, and it accompanies these young women on their progress from the crippling poverty at home to the affluence of the Gulf states. Its central subjects are their dream of a better life, the hopeless dilemma these young women are caught up in and the perpetual violation of human rights.

The documentary film #MYESCAPE assesses the journey that refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Eritrea chose to undergo, as circumstances in their home-countries have become increasingly unliveable. Hundreds of thousands are leaving their home countries, families and old lives behind, in search of some basic safety and freedom. In some cases, the mobile phone fulfilled the role of a constant companion and became a quintessential tool to facilitate the organisation of ones escape. This has lead many to document their experiences.

Autumn 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. While still a powerful presence in the minds of older generations, it is simply past history for young people and visitors to Berlin today. And it is tough to find any traces left on the cityscape.

The “Where is the Wall?” documentary focuses on Japanese photographer Takahisa Matsuura’s search for any and all that remains of the Berlin Wall. He studied in Berlin during the 1980s and took over 2,000 photos of the wall. Now he is engaged in a struggle to reconstruct where it once stood. Driven by the simple desire to see any bits of the Berlin Wall that still exist, he begins at Brandenburg Gate and tours what used to be a strip of no-man’s land between the two Germanys.
